Nelson Mandela“In those early years, the International Committee of the Red Cross was the only organization that both listened to our complaints and responded to them. This was vital, because the authorities ignored us.” (N. Mandela, “Long walk to Freedom”)

Not only in his autobiography “Long walk to Freedom”, but also through his speeches and other public interaction, Nelson Mandela always spoke about the importance of the work carried out by the 51DVbVOCedL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_ICRC, particularly with reference to our efforts in favour of detainees. On Nelson Mandela International Day, we remember these words which ring true of the ICRC even today.

Mandela served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999.  He was the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. Before that he spent 27 years in prison.
